The county of South Yorkshire was formed in 1974 which encompasses the boroughs of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield. The area developed around the coal and iron industrial parts of the region and was well known for their Sheffield steel until the mines were closed in the 1980's. Cave art and historic artefacts have been found that are believed to date back 12800 years (Palaeolithic period) in Creswell Crags as well as an 8000 BC Mesolithic home in Deepcar, North Sheffield. There are many place to visit in South Yorkshire including 2 castles and many museums and mansion houses throughout the region.
