Ever since the Neolithic Age (10,000 BC) settlements have been found all over the flat land. The USAAF and the RAF bases were built during World War II and the only American burial ground in the UK, Madingley Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial is located here. Holme Fen is 2.75 m below sea level, the lowest for the UK. Amongst the 18 settlements there is one of the largest ancient woods, Brampton Wood along with 5 churches, 7 houses, an airfield, 2 rail ways and a few Nature Reserves and parks.
