Follw Millcross road to the cross roads and turn right.
Cycle to the T-Junction with Victoria Street and turn left and head into Newton Stewart town centre.
Follow the road all the way until the roundabout with the A95. Head straight over this roundabout and carry along Wigtown road.
Cycle until for about a mile and a half and take the side road on your left, heading off the main road.
This takes you on to a lovely stretch of road heading around the Moss of Cree. There is a nice forest here that may be worth exploring too.
Cycle along this route until you come to T-junction left and then the road should lead in to Wigtown town centre.
Stay on this road until you are about to leave Wigtown and take the side road off to your right, should be sign posted Spittal.
This will take you along a route parallel to the river. There can be a few cars but it is a fairly easy stretch of road with nice views.
Keep cycling until you come to the crossroads in Spittal.
Turn right here and cycle for another 2 miles and take a side road left.
This road will take you all the way back to the A95 just outside Newton Stewart. Turn right and cycle for another mile or so and your back at the roundabout in step 4.

Spotted this suggested route on website, and as I live nearby I opted to try it out. I did it in reverse, heading from Benfield through Spittal into Wigtown and then out alongside The Solway back into Newton Stewart. Nice route, missed the main Wigtown Road, so very few cars. Good mix of flat roads, gentle hills and steeper section, giving a good workout with some beautiful views of the Wigtownshire Countryside. Took just under 2.5 hours in sunny (but very windy) weather with no stops. A nice stop for lunch would be the Bladnoch Inn just outside of Wigtown (a very short detour). The final stretch back into Wigtown now has a cycle track for the last 1.5 miles, meaning you avoid the main Wigtown Road. All in all, a nice route to push on or gently enjoy. Recommended! Thanks.
