An expanded version of the Kells Circular taking you further off the beaten track. We start by following the main Oldcastle road out of Kells before taking the sign for Crossakiel, with a little climb and great view from this village [home of the writer of the red flag]. Then onwards on the back roads with very light traffic before coming to the ancient monastic settlement of Fore. We take an easy to follow backroads route into Oldcastle town, following the quiet regional roads though Virginia and Baileborough. Backroads again thought the small villages of Teirworker, Cormeen and Kilmainhamwood, which is your last chance to refuel before a final run though the lovely bog road though Emlagh bog. You rejoin the old kells –navan road and follow it past the headfort estate and golf club before returning to the start. |
