This route takes you from High Barnet throught Potters Bar, and once through the latter into beautiful countryside and relatively quiet car free roads/lanes. As a beginner it's a fairly taxing run ( takes about 2 and a quarter hrs on a non racing bike) but to more seasoned cyclists it's probably "easy". I wasn't sure how to grade it so went for a 5 out of 10. The longest uphill bit is a long gradual climb from the B158 to Little Berkhampstead and a section on the return journey up Woodfield Lane.If you want to avoid part of the busy road from Barnet to Potters Bar, take the Kitts End Rd and Dancers Hill Rd which will add a bit of distance, but it's a lot quieter. My favourite part of the ride is the flat part of the route from Ashendene Rd along Bayford Lane (in particular the 90 degree bend at the village pub - don't ask me why just try it yourself). Enjoy. | |

You'll go past the Battle of Barnet obelisk on your way out of Barnet and shortly after that the Byng family owned Wrotham Park - you can find out about a famous ancestor Captain Byng on the net. Take a break on the way back at the first good coffee shop on your left hand side as you enter Potters Bar ( the thought of it keeps me going ). Alternatively , stop approx half way at the village pub in Little Berkhamstead. There's a Rochford bike shop conveniently placed just as you go into Potters Bar, on the left hand side - friendly helpful people. |
