Start from the Spar carpark and follow the National Cyle Route signs past the Mill on the Fleet and up to Gatehouse Station (disused) for 6 miles uphill but with great views. Turn left towards Creetown and enjoy a long downhill ride looking out towards the Solway Firth. Take the A75 towards Newton Stewart to avoid a very steep section. The road is wide and most lorry drivers give you room. Turn left at the roundabout and head for Wigtown and turn right before you get there to Bladnoch. Signposted to Whithorn and then the Isle of Whithorn. Superb sea views and good car parking. The Steam Packet Inn can be heartily recommended with a selection of real ales and the bacon & brie baguette is to die for after a long ride. | |
