I personally wouldn t cycle on it but there might be some other routes and roads close by to cycle on that would get you to Perth. Have a look at some maps. Plus there might be some more scenic, quieter routes. Anyway good luck |

Joined: 09 Dec 2011 Posts: 84 Bike: My Profile | Have ridden it twice. Once in 1990, up & down. Once in 2007, just down, en route from JOG to LE. It is a busy busy road, but so are many others! The descent from Drumochter, in either direction, is awesome. You just seem to go so fast so effortlessly for so long(unusual in our small country). The only really 'dodgy' bit I remember was a section somewhere round Aviemore, where there was no little 'bike strip'(like that found on dual carriageways) so you are 'in' the traffic(no problem given you're perfectly legally entitled to do so) which, on the a9, can be a wee bit hairy. As always though, ride assertively and the traffic will react accordingly. The only other 'problem' I encountered was some stupid bitch(ain't it always the way) screaming at me from her car. I think it was something about using the(very very poor by comparison, again as always in our land) cycle path route. She nearly crashed when she heard how loudly I could scream in return and, as always, refused my invitation to pull over(there are plenty of layby's en route) so we could 'discuss' it further... I tell people though, esp. those who are automatically negative towards motorists, that, on riding the full length of the uk I met 3 motorists who were anything less than courteous. Arseholes can be found amongst all road-users, of which we are only one group. I can understand people being a bit shy with regards to the a9, and other similarly busy/fast roads(personally, I think the road from inverness to fort william's(a85 i think) a much less pleasant experience than the a9. Tis better to live for one moment than to merely exist for 100 years. I'd have regrets, having ridden it & experienced the ride, if I hadn't ridden it(lots do ride it btw), but we're all different...... If you choose your day(weather/time) carefully, it could well be a ride you'll remember forever for all the right reasons.....Along with all your fellow road users..... |
