Should I buy a bike from Halfords

Joined: 22 Sep 2009 Posts: 3 Bike:	I can get a large discount from the company I work for if I buy a bike from Halfords in addition to this I can still benefit from the bike to work scheme. Collective this would mean nearly fifty percent discount. On looking on the site the have a Carera which boasts a corbon frame and some good bits hanging from it. Its mark up is Â£1000. My mate explained that mountain bikers shy away from Halfords and the street cred for their own brand is poor. I suppose my question is why is this and should I chance buying this bike? Please help

the bike to worjk scheme with Halfords SHOULD allow you to have ANY bike you want, and Halfords HAVE to source it for you.
That is the way our scheme works.
With this, though, you will lose your Halfords discount, and just get the bike to work discount.

Halfords staff undergo the same level of rigorous training a hamster needs to run in its wheel, so take any 'advice' offered with a pinch of salt.

The Boardman range is good, so i'm told and have seen - i'm getting one.

Bigger companies tend to use a third party. some schemes are Halfords / Evans based for national coverage, and some are specifically geared around the Local Bike Shop. you, Sir, are one of the lucky ones!

Nothing wrong with a Carrera in my opinion.I have a Subway,and a Trek Road Bike,and i swear,there is no difference in speed,as the road bike doesn't absorb the imperfect road surface as well as a Hybrid,so you lose momentum on a road bike,but may be faster on sections where the road surface is near perfect (which can be rare in London).People can be very pious about bikes,frames etc,without being fully aware that a lot of bikes sold in chain stoes are manafactured to the same spec,or furthermore in the same place as branded bikes.It's weird,people appear to be as judgemental about which bike you ride,as which car you drive-self esteem i guess.

I have 2 Carreras.an Axle LTD hybrid,which I have run for 18 months without any problems ,although I did upgrade the pedals.My other Carrera is a Virtuoso road bike which I have just bought and again I,m very impressed with,the only upgrade so far being fitting a pair of Gatorskin tyres for their excellent puncture resistance.Both bikes were very well set up by my local Bike Hut staff,although I have heard tales where some branches' mechanics are less than competent.

In my opinion as a retired engineer stay well away pay a bit more and go to a small guy. The crank fault can't be corrected as its been cross threaded.

I am not really a cardigan guy because I think that they are too girly for me. I like my fashion to be simple, functional and comfortable. I would take a sweatshirt over a cardigan on any cold winter day. Also, cardigans from what I can see are pretty expensive when you get one that is from an iconic brand or just a little lower than that from a generic brand in the fashion industry. I would rather save a little bit of money than spend one on a cardigan. It is so unlike the difference between a plants vs zombies full version online and an among us game in chrome.
