With 27 small towns and villages, West Lothian has a diverse history. Bathgate, for example, has been established since 1100. Most towns were mining towns or highland cow cattle herding. Shale oil contributed towards the population growth. East Calder offers (2) pubs, a chip shop and a coin operated public toilet, Dechmont has a population of 989, Breich has a training track on the speedway in the 1960's, Fauldhouse has an 18 hole golf course and finally Armandale has greyhound and stock car racing. Even though this region is full of towns, there is still an abundance of wildlife and open landscape.
