Branching out on its own, North Ayrshire was created in 1996. There are three areas that fall under this region. The first area called Mainland, has 26 towns and villages. Some villages had shipbuilding and would export coal to other parts of Europe and North America. In 1883, a town called Dalry, prehistoric otter and human bones were found. The second area is called Arran which only has four villages, one being a popular holiday spot. The last island, The Cumbraes only has one town called Millport that survives mostly from tourists taking day trips.
