buttermilk hill?

Its used on the Evans Cycles "Ride it" road sportive in cannock. Just interested as me and a couple of cycling buddies were out riding around cannock and rugeley a few weeks back and we came to a hill that was apparently a 13% gradient but it seemed more like 30%! Needless to say we were all off our bikes before we got to the top. Was this Buttermilk hill?? steve

Buttermilk Hill is just northwest of Blithfield Reservoir. And you'd have been passing people who stayed on their bikes. Me and my mate barely made it, our front wheels skipping off the tarmac at every pedal stroke. At the top, he muttered "I thought that my insides were going to come out". That's Buttermilk Hill. It was on the 2011 Tour of Britain route.

I rode the named sportive on Sunday (07/10/12) in good company and at a reasonable pace.
A seasoned and veteran cyclist, alas... Buttermilk Hill bested me and I was also forced to drag my weary feet up the steep slope.
My companion (somewhat younger and more lithe I hasten to add) managed to gallantly pedal all the way, though he did put his success down in part to being equipped with a triple.
Incidently Evans should be commended for an excellent event. The staff were freindly chatty and helpful, the drink stations well stocked, and the organisation well orchestrated. All this for Twelve and a half quid... well underpriced.. Thankyou Evans.

I have rode up Buttermilk Hill since my original post with much more success. I think the problem was, my friends and I were too eager to get up there and went as hard as possible. My next attempt was a little more reserved and I made it, I still found the road surface quite tricky though....

I knew what to expect, so managed to ride up ok, I have got a hybrid though so probably lower gearing, and hats off to the car that waited for me near the top :-)

There was an annual Hill Climb KCC club event on Buttermilk hill, most competitors (including me) used a fixed 60 inch gear. I left the Midlands in the 1960s I assume the KCC closed.
