Hi

My 9 year old son would like to do a 100km bike ride to raise money for his friend's charity fund. Does anyone know of any traffic free routes that aren't too difficult please? Doesn't necessarily have to be in the West Midlands.

Hi Mason,
You could check out Sustrans for some ideas. Although I don't think there are many totally traffic free routes around your area. I had a thought that you could try contacting any of the cycling clubs in your area and see if they could suggest something, or maybe let you know of a velodrome your son could usefor the attempt.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Chris

Have you thought about using parts of the c2c routes. If you start in consett you can take the derwent valley route to Newcastle and south shields. From there you can drop down the coast to Sunderland and pick up another route that goes to Durham and from there you can pick up the lanchester valley walk back to Consett. Its not totally traffic free but not too much on roads. Alternatively from consett use the waskerley way, lanchester valley and deerness valley routes and just go there and back. You should be able to get 100km of totally traffic free cycling if you do this.

Hi.
Had a look at my suggestion I posted yesterday and worked out this route

http://www.walkjogrun.net/routes/current_route.cfm?rid=C8C9B30C-0399-D3EF-DCBDA1296CFED0E9&success=1

There are some road crossings but apart from a short stretch of about 500m through Rowlands Gill (where you can ride on the pavement) there is nothing 'on road' and the route is completely traffic free.If you start at the beginning of the Derwent Walk in Swalwell you'll see that the main climb is at the start up to Consett meaning that on the return leg it's all downhill to the finish. Good cafe at Knitsley Farm (right on the route). Also other cafes in Lanchester. Pub in Waterhouses near the 50km point.

Hope this helps
