Clunky gears

Joined: 25 Jul 2012 Posts: 23 Bike: My Profile	Hi everyone, I've recently returned to road biking over the past month or two and have a little annoying problem with my gears. Although the gears change ok and the bike runs well, it doesn't sound smooth. Now and again the bike sounds 'clunky' and rattles. Does anyone have any ideas? Cheers, Steve

I would struggle to sneak up on anybody unannounced on mine. you could look into indexing the gears (after a clean of casette and chain). indexing is a black art to most (me included) and is easier with new cables. old cables can get strectched and causes the chain to change gears badly. Alternatively it could be wear on the chain, casette or both. deraulier jockey wheels could be worn too but that is less likely to be the cause. i remember now I had an issue that wouldnt go away a few years back on my mountain bike - turned out my deraileur was skew (probably from an off). It was not apparent till the guy in my LBS showed me mine and a new one. You cant index gears with with a skew derailieur maybe that will solve the black art part of indexing for me - dunno. Turned out the bang on the derailier had stripped the thread on the hanger too and they had to rebore the hole and put a new thread/nut in place. :-( Good luck with your cycling. Buster
