| 1. A good quiet cycle route on tow paths, off-street cycle paths and wide roads with light traffic. Ideal for people who might be less confident about cycling in heavy traffic, but enjoy a day's cycle.
The route is easy to navigate, removing the need to faff around too much with maps. It is perhaps not as flat as you might imagine; there are some rolling hills, but nothing too long or too steep.
The first part of the route from London to Ware follows the Lea Valley, alongside the navigation. The path is variable, with a few short cobbled sections, but is generally well maintained, with only one potholey section around Broxbourne.
The second part from Ware to Cambridge follows B roads, which have fairly fast moving cars, but very little traffic thanks to the parallel A10 trunk road. The roads are wide and cars can pass with ease - you will see several cyclists of all abilities along these roads.
The final section into Cambridge itself is on segregated cycle paths, and on a cycle route alongside the guided busway for the final couple of miles. The route finishes at the station, but it is just a mile or so into the city itself. Cambridge is very cycle-friendly, with good facilities for cyclists. |
