Cycle Steps
1. This is a nice simple route that is very flat being near to the coast. It is also not circular, so it can be doubled for those of you who are fit.
2. Head along the High Street east towards the small village Howes, once you arrive at Howes follow the B724 south east.
3. Half a mile from Howes take a side road left, the road isnt signposted on maps but there is a nice backroad heading towards Newbie.
4. When you arrive in Newbie turn right onto Three Trees Road. Cycle this road north until it leads you back to B724. Turn left here.
5. Take the 2nd road on your left following signs for Powfoot Village, this gives a nice cycle along the sea front. Keep cycling until you arrive at the Queensberry Bay Caravan park. Cycle through here and turn left on to the road at the other side.
6. Follow Roxburgh's road, for the next few miles until you can turn left at the signpost for Ruthwell or National Cycle Route 7 signpost. Ruthwell is a small town on the Solway Firth. It is famous as Dr Henry Duncan opened the first commercial savings bank in 1810 and hence there is now a Savings Bank Museum if it takes your fancy.
7. Cycle out of Ruthwell and join the B725. This is the nice straight forward part of the cycle. Keep cycling until you arrive in Bankend. Turn left and cycle for 2 miles, until you see the castle on your left.
Landmarks/Sites to see?
Caerlock Castle is a fine example of a medieval fortress which even has it's own moat and cafe for snacks. Powfoot has lovely roads along the coast, it once used to be a fishing village and has also been used by smugglers. It has since been turned into a holiday resort, hence the campsite. Just after Ruthwell there is Clarencefield pub that does good lunches.
