Cycle Steps
1. An interesting ride through some delightful little villages/hamlets with some good foodie pubs and two tea rooms. A gory story and a famous historical figure ban be spotted enroute. From The Green leave the village down Dames Lane then turn left onto Pinfold. Follow the road round the sharp left then turn right to leave the village. At the end of the road head towards Shackerstone, Congerstone. After crossing the railway and canal bridges you come into Shackerstone. If you didn’t make Newton your start point the Victorian tea rooms would make a good break. Continue out of the village until you come to the primary school. Turn right down Gopsal Lane and follow the road left into the village and out along Gibbet Lane. Half way along Gibbet Lane you will pass the gibbet post it is named after. A read of the information board gives the gory details of a murder. Continue until you reach the A444 then turn left towards Sibson. In Sibson you will pass The Cock a good food pub (a few of these on this route). Continue towards Fenny Drayton. Take the first right into Fenny Drayton, Old forge Road. Continue through the village where the road becomes George Fox Lane, named after George Fox the founder of the Quakers. You will see a small monument to him as he lived here when the village was called Drayton-in-the-Clay. At the A444 turn left again heading back towards Sibson but take the right, Fenn Lanes towards Sutton Cheney. This is a long straightish road that takes you into Sutton Cheney past the Sutton Wharf tea rooms. In the summer the car park gets a little busy so not the best start/end point but it is a good stop point for a cuppa. Continue through Sutton Cheney where there are a further two good food pubs, The Hercules and The Royal Arms. Go through the village till you reach a sharp right bend with turn off to the left. Take the left into the village of Cadeby. Turn left at the end of the road and wind through the village and out towards Market Bosworth. You come into Bosworth with Bosworth on your left. Turn left to go into the village but watch out for the one way system. Keep left from The Park onto Rectory lane. You pass a pay and display car park, on your right, just before the end of the road. Turn right into the Market Place towards the centre of the village and Dixie Grammar School. (If you turn left you will come to a good chippie The Batter of Bosworth). Turn right past the Co-op till you get to Ye Olde Red Lion then turn left. If you miss this turn you will be back into the one way system and have to go back round again. Go out of the village heading back towards Newton Burgoland. You will pass a field on the left, just out of the village with llamas. Continue along and through Carlton and the pub The Gate Hangs Well telling you this was once a toll road. Then through Barton in the Beans and Odstone. The road into Odstone has been resurfaced and can be very tempting to take too fast. Go through Odstone and climb out of the village. You will go over two humped back bridges. After the second turn left at the sign post for Shackerstone Congerstone to take you back towards the start point the long way round otherwise continue straight on at this point back into Newton Burgoland just around a couple of bend. Bear left onto the narrow School Lane and left at the school brings you back to The Green. If you used the Belper Arms or even the Spade Tree as your starting point carry on through the village till you come to the Belper on your right or the Spade Tree on your left.
