Cycle Steps
1. This is a family friendly, road route, mainly on country roads, apart from the start and finish in Keswick, that is relatively flat for the area. Starting from Station Road, turn right onto Victoria Street, A5271 and head through Keswick on the A5271. When the A5271 becomes High Hill and turns sharp right, go straight ahead, off the A5271 and onto the High Street, B5289. As the B5271 turns sharp left, turn off the B5271 onto Church Lane. At the roundabout turn left and follow the lane back to the B5289 T junction. Turn right onto the B5289 and then take the first left off again onto a country lane heading for Portinscale. Follow this to the T junction in Portinscale. Turn left at the T junction, and follow this as it goes down the side of Derwent Water for a short period. The road will then bend right away from the water and come to a fork. Take the right hand road, heading towards Newland Beck. Follow the road as it swings round to the left and comes to a right turn for Newland Beck. Follow this as it turns left over the river and goes through Newland Beck. On the way out of Newland Beck take the sharp dogleg turn off to the left. Follow this south tracking along the side of the trees and hills until the sharp dogleg turn-off to the left, heading for Stair. Follow this road through Stair and back towards Derwent Water until you come to the fork where you turned right on the way out. This completes a loop at the bottom of the ride. Go back onto the original road, heading back towards Portinscale. Retrace your ride out back to Keswick. (Please note that the route, as drawn, does not go back to Keswick, but stops at B, at the end of the bottom loop. As a result, the complete route back to Keswick is actualy just over 2 miles longer than shown, with the complimentary additional time to complete this. Not much, but given the not unusual "Are we nearly there yet" family question, it may be important.)
