Cycle Steps
1. This route is a difficult 90 miler, with long hard climbs and fast downhill sections. It heads out of Nantwich on the A534 towards Wrexham, approx 22 miles. The roads are in good condition, but are gently rolling, and offer a good warm up. Head for the town centre, as there are plenty of shops around to refuel as you go. Take the A525, Ruthin Road, up past Minera and to Bwlchgwyn (which claims to be the highest village in Wales, at 333 mtrs), all I can tell you is that its pretty hard going, approx 5 miles from Wrexham, and you can refuel at the shop in the village. The views up here of Cheshire are fantastic and well worth the grind. This is your last chance to refuel before hitting the A5. Carry on through Pen-y-Stryt, and down on the A5104 towards Corwen. Again lovely views. Take the A5, heading towards Betws-y-Coed. There is a cafe restaurant near Bro Garmon, and a stream and waterfall, if you need to cool down after this. This is the second climb of the ride its long and seems neverending, but again worth it when you get to Betws-y-Coed. The A5 towards Betws-y-Coed can be busy, although there are enough tractors and cyclists on the road to keep the traffic slow enough. Turn left off the A5 onto the A4086, just before Capel Curig, sign posted Porthmadog. Take the A498, and around Nant Gwynant, Snowdon is on the right hand side, which means more long ascents. Take a left, off the A498, after you pass through Plas Gwynant, and across the river. Continue through Llanfrothen and follow signs for Porthmadog (or we stay in a campsite at Maentwrog, for 16 pounds per night, which have good facilities and a pub just down the road).
Landmarks/Sites to see?
Cafe and shops and Halfords in Wrexham. Spar in Bwlchgwyn, last shop. There is a fishing place, with a cafe, but is not always open, in Brynegiwys, just before A5. There is a cafe in Bro Garmon, and bike shop and cafes in Betwys-y-Coed. This is your last stop before Porthmadog or Maentwrog.
