Cycle Steps
1. The route heads out of Cranleigh into the Surrey Hills (North Downs) around Leith Hill (Holmbury St Mary and later Coldharbour). Some steep hills as you approch Leith Hill (when you turn off the B2126 onto Pasture Wood Rd) but then a nice long descent as you come off the hill & head back to Ockley. More steep hills as you climb up to Coldharbour (along Broome Hall Rd) followed by a nice drop into Dorking. The roads up to this point are country lanes but through Dorking they're town roads. A brief trip along the A24 to leave Dorking is made easier by the fact there's a cycle track to keep you out of the way of the busy traffic but you do need to cross it in order to begin the climb to Box hill up the B2209. Just after joining the B2209 there's a choice of turning right up the steeper "Zig Zag Rd" or carry on following this route up the slightly easier but longer climb up to Box Hill. Roads from this point are country lanes again but it gets busier at the top of Box Hill because it's a popular spot with cyclists and Ramblers. Stop for a well earned rest and refreshments at the NT center at the top of Box Hill (Date slices and a cup of tea are recommended). The descent down Box hill follows "Zig Zag Rd" back to the A24 which you follow before turning left onto the B2038 past Dorking cricket club. Follow the A25 (busy with fast moving traffic) for a couple of miles before turning right through Brockham. The rest of the route winds through country lanes with a few small hills (nothing worth noting compared to the last few). Scenery is worth taking in and you pass through some lovely villages on the route back.
Landmarks/Sites to see?
Villages in the Surrey Hills offer good places to stop for refreshments and admire the views. The National Trust center at Box Hill is a great place to stop (very popular with cyclists) and recoup some energy (Date Slices or the aptly named "revival flapjack" are recommended.
