Cycle Steps
1. This is a variation on a route posted by Happy. Head east on A708 and then turn right before you reach the hospital heading for Newton. At Newton turn right, go under the motorway and join the B7076, N74 cycleway. This is a lovely quiet road with a decent cycle lane at either side and takes you through some interesting and attractive countryside. I was amazed at the quality of this "B" road, much superior to many up North where I'm based, and with hardly any traffic in early March when we did it. At the T-junction with the A701, which feeds the motorway, turn left and shortly after turn right onto a small road leading down after a mile or so to a roundabout where you take the first exit back on to the B7076. Follow this gradually uphill until Harthope Bank where you turn right onto a bridge over the motorway. There's a short climb, which when we did it was easy as the wind into which we had been struggling was now at our backs. At the top of the hill there's a fine descent to Moffat, but watch out for the junction with the A701 where you have to give way. Looking at the map there are many variations which could lengthen this route if you are looking for something more challenging. This route was added from a GPX file.
