Cycle Steps
1. This is a route that is mainly on cycle paths and canal towpaths, so not best suited to pure road bikes. Starting from Station Road, Uphall. Cycle right down A89 on cycle path, through Broxburn, past the petrol station to the viaduct (keeping on the cycle path at all times). Just past the viaduct there is a small road to your right which you should take and follow this road until you reach a T junction. At this point take a left, cycle over the motorway bridge and then under the canal bridge. Follow the road until you reach a sharp right turn. Take a left, down the dirt road until you reach what looks like a farmers field (you can join the canal foot path here). Cycle along the canal footpath, over the viaduct and continue past the first bridge until you reach the second bridge. Come off the canal footpath and join Clifton Road. Cycle along the road, passing the first farm on your left and continue along until you reach a T junction. Take a right at the junction and continue along the road until you reach a Y junction. Take the left fork of the junction and head straight up until you reach the main road (B7015) leading out of East Calder. At this point take a left and continue along the road heading into East Calder. At the entrance of Almondell Country Park (which looks like a small gate house) turn down this road and head down the hill until you reach a bridge which takes you over the Almond. (slow here as the next turn is just at the other side of the bridge). Turn left at the other side of the bridge and continue along the dirt foot path. You cross over a small metal plate bridge (care should be taken here as it is very slippy when wet) and follow the path right. You will see another viaduct in front of you. Continue along just past the viaduct until you see a small brown sign with a small bridge crossing over a stream. Cross this bridge and dismount to climb the many steps that await you… Climb the steps and then at the top take a left and follow the dirt path heading up towards Pumpherston. As you cycle along this path you will see a chicken farm on your right and then Old Shale Mines further along. Cycle under the road bridge and continue on the dirt path until you reach Uphall station. Cycle under the railway bridge and the under the motorway bridge. Continue along the path until you reach the footbridge which takes you over the A89. At this point you can join back on to the A89 and cycle along until you reach the beginning of your route.
