Cycle Steps
1. This route is about 80% road and has some fantastic views from both the South Downs and across the valley from Pulborough. There are four pretty villages on route, all with some good pubs (Rising Sun in Nutbourne, White Horse at Mare Hill). There are a couple of longish climbs and some bridleway work leading up to the South Downs way. Also it starts and ends near to the station at Pulborough. From Pulborough take the start of the Bridleway from the A29, past the allotments on right and the manor house on the left. The Bridleway crosses the top of a ridge and then crosses Broomers Hill Lane, it carries on until Nutbourne Lane. this has a good downhill which takes you past the pub. Carry on through Nutbourne and head down Stream Lane, which can occasionally flood. When you head up Chantry Lane you have the lengthiest climb and also the steepest (about 1 in 6 for 1 mile). At the end of this is a carpark and the South Downs Way. From up here are the best views. The only other steep hill is on the way down from the South Downs Way into Amberley. This is pretty steep and rutted. Head through Amberley, which is very picturesque and has some good pubs. There is a good pub at Mare Hill after which Broomers Hill Lane is another longish but not too steep climb. Probably it is worth taking a 1:25000 O/S map.
