Cycle Steps
1. From Spennymoor head uphill on Wyners Close to Kirk Merrington, before descending into Leasingthorne. Continue through Old Eldon to Shildon, then there is a steep climb up Brussleton Bank. Head down the Roman Road, which becomes the (B6275) towards Piercebridge. However, turn right along the delightful twisting Summerhouse Back Lane. At Summerhouse, turn right along the mostly flat road to Staindrop, before joining the A688 towards Bishop Auckland. Continue to follow this until the left turn into Durham Road at Middlestone Moor. Follow this road back into Spennymoor. I did this early on a Sunday morning and hardly saw any traffic until I got onto the A688 at about 17 miles in!! Even then the traffic wasn't heavy but I think it would be in the week.
Landmarks/Sites to see?
Shildon houses one the sites of the National Rail museum which is free and boasts a number of historic engines. The views of Raby Castle are magnificent with herds of deer grazing in its grounds. There are plenty of decent country pubs on route. Bob Bartram's cycle shop is directly on route in Clyde Terrace in Spennymoor and is a Giant dealer. There is also a Halfords in Bishop Auckland, not sure if there is an independant cycle shop there but would be amazed if there wasn't.
