1. A route from Newark to Grantham using off road cycle tracks and quiet country lanes. The first 5 miles follows NCN 64 and the Newark to Cotham railway track. The route then uses NCN 64 and NCN 15 to Bottesford. Care has to be taken through Bottesford because Sustrans have not completed the signing. Go through the village centre (towards Muston) past the Red Lion pub (on your left) and turn right by the skate park along Easthorpe Lane. After about a mile turn left down Muston Lane (do not be put off by the no through road sign). This lane takes you down to the A52 which you must cross. You can now pick up the NCN 15 signs again. Cycle through Muston towards Woolsthorpe. You can see Beevoir Castle on your right in the distance. Keep looking to your left because its easy to miss the start of the disused railway line which the cyle path now takes. Look out for the gate to Sedgebrook Mill. The railway path soon joins the Grantham Canal but you do not go on to the towpath yet. The railway path (which is not gravelled) eventually joins the Grantham Canal towpath by a millenium post marker. You now turn left and follow the towpath all the way to the end. When you come to the busy A Road cross over as the cyle path is on the other side. Turn left and follow the road in to Grantham turning right after the railway bridge and up to the station.
This is a pleasant ride with very little traffic apart from the final approach to Grantham. It is almost entirely flat. |
