A lovely 44-mile route through north Oxfordshire along country lanes. Taking in Banbury, North Newington, Shutford, Tadmarton Heath, Wigginton, Swerford, Church Enstone, Cleveley, Radford, Kiddington, Over Kiddington, Glympton, Steeple Barton, Middle Barton, Over Worton, Nether Worton, Barford St Michael, Barford St john, Bloxham, Milton, Adderbury and Banbury | |

NORTH NEWINGTON: Dovecote in the field in front of Park Farm. SHUTFORD: From 1750 until the mid twentieth century, it was an important centre for plush weaving. Its plush factory closed in 1948. TADMARTON HEATH: Remains of an iron age hillfort. WIGGINTON: A large roman villa was once situated close to where the parish church now stands. SWERFORD: Remains of a Norman motte and bailey just to the north of the church. HEYTHROP PARK: Heythrop Zoological Gardens is the largest private zoo in Europe and its animals are used in TV shows and films. ENSTONE: Enstone developed at the intersection of two turnpikes. Its name is derived from the nearby neolithic tomb on the Charlbury Road. KIDDINGTON: The garden of Kiddington Hall was laid out by Capability Brown. OVER KIDDINGTON: Large cedar tree. The BARTONS: The population of original settlements of Steeple Barton and Westcott Barton shrunk dramatically in the Middle Ages due to the Black Death. After that period most of the survivors relocated at Middle Barton. OVER WORTON: View over the Tew Valley. |
