I have been cycling for about 2 months average about 60 miles a week roughly 3 x 20 miles. My average speed is about 17-18mph. I am fed up of riding on my own and have the opportunity to join a local ride that does about 50 miles at average speed of 18-22 mph. Any tips on what i can do to ensure that i don't act like a complete amateur. And do you think that i am ready to join such a ride out or should i keep building my miles up on my own for a bit longer. I do feel a bit intimidated as its all a bit new to me. Please Advise....

I'm keen to start cycling as well as walking; or as an alternative to cycling as my ankles are not what they used to be, and walking is often painful.

I have decided that walking routes that go over farmland, and are not on tracks, footpaths or bridleways are potentially problematic. Anything across the middle of a field is best avoided. I have a hybrid bike, not a mountain bike.

However; I'm not sure what the legal situation is over public rights of way, and "other public access on os maps. I'm also aware that "heavy duty cyclists" and motorized cyclists are not much loved on walking routes. that said, I can see no reason why walkers should expect exclusive access to some/most paths, footpaths, (tracks if such a thing exists) , etc other than legal reasons.

How can I determine the legallity of a proposed route, before I set off, and without "sucking and seeing' ?

Advice will be much appreciated,

regards,

Hi - newbie here. Great site and some fab routes posted here.

I've been cycling around East Lothian and the Lammermuirs - mainly on road with smidgns of off road sections.

I have now overcome my fear of cows (!!) and reckon I can tackle some longer off road routes. I fancy trying to take the Herring Road from Dunbar to Whiteadder, and the Southern Upland way from Cockburnspath to Abbey St Bathans.

Has anyone else cycled these routes? Are they even cycleable or are they just walking routes? Any other suggestions in East Lothian/Lammermuirs/Borders?

Thanks all,

My wife and I are planning to spend a couple of days in Westward Ho! for our 10th Anniversary including cycling the off-road sections fo the tarke trail.

I'm wondering whether to take my road bike hybrid (700x25 tyres), which I would prefer as it's new! Alternatively, I could take my mountain bike, which would also be fun.

Does anyone have any experience of the trail please.

Thanks

I've just started cycling again after a couple of years break, and find that North Tyneside council have done quite a bit of work on many of the cycle paths.

They've also produced a set of leaflets with short circular routes (5 miles ish), based on the old mine rail tracks, which can be found at:
