| Flat journey following canal towpath from Wigan Pier until you meet main road (cycle lane for majority) to Southport. Only snag we found was Sunday morning fishing competition and part of towpath closed for repair, but this is usually a winter activity by the waterways people so shouldn't be a problem in summer. |

Route along canal passes close to Appley Bridge, Parbold and Burscough all of which have canalside pubs. Also a nice cafe right by the canal at Parbold. Lots of shops in Southport. Wigan to Southport railway runs close by most of the route so your journey can be shortened by taking a train from several places en route.
