This route is mostly by canal, except for a short part by road through Barlaston & Meaford, and is mostly a straightforward route. My only difficulty was the part where you turn off the canal on Route 5 onto the road at Barlaston. I completely missed it going there, but it was fine on the way back.
The route starts at the bridge into the Westport Lake area - this is by the new visitor centre. There is a footpath leading from the road onto the canal.
Follow the canal to Etruria, where the towpath moves from one side of the canal to the other. Once you have passed the Toby Carvery at the marina there, you will have to go up to the main route across the canal. This is not on the actual Etruria Road (A53), but simply go along its pavement until you come to the path down to the other side. Remember to turn back on yourself and go under the bridge you have just crossed to be on your way along the canal again.
National Cycle Network Route 5 joins the canal at Glebe Street. Note that on the way back you can either leave the canal to follow Route 5 to Stoke Rail Station, Hanley ('city centre'), Cobridge, Burslem, Tunstall and onto Kidsgrove, Alsager & Crewe, OR there is a signpost on the canal which indicates you can carry on along the canal for "Alternative route to TUNSTALL via Westport Lake".
Also note that when you are passing the incinerator at Sideway, there is a signpost for "Stoke 1.3 miles". If you take this turning, there is a link to a route to the Britannia Stadium (you will see the bridge over the canal, but the link to it is not particularly visible from the towpath and it is not signposted). To head to the Britannia Stadium, take the turning for Stoke, then when it indicates you should go straight on, turn left (to run parallel with the towpath) to go up and over the bridge). Also near the stadium are a Harvester and a Holiday Inn Express.
Note: If you want to go to Wedgwood en route, be sure to leave the canal at the first bridge you come to once you have passed the factory on the canal. The factory is visible on the left of the canal not long after passing through Trentham.
Anyway, to go to Stone just go straight on along the canal and keep going until you reach the Plume Of Feathers pub at Barlaston. This is where I missed my turning. If you do not take this turning, you may continue along the canal but it is unsurfaced and very bumpy - fine for experienced riders, but not really for families etc. So I would recommend you turn off at the Plume Of Feathers for Route 5. At Station Road (the road running past the pub) turn right. At the next junction turn left onto Meaford Road and follow the road. It's hard to tell you where to turn off because I don't know the name of the road but it is definitely signposted. Make sure to look for the NCN signs on lamposts as they are not always obvious.
When you see the sign, you will turn left onto a country road. At the top of this you will follow the road round as it runs parallel to the canal. It will rise up slightly as it reaches a bend in the road (heading left) and a bridge onto the canal to the right. Be careful here as you won't see oncoming cars until they have rounded the bend.
Once you have rejoined the canal towpath, keep going and it will take you right to Stone. Not long after the Chandlery there will be a signpost indicating you should go over the bridge to the town centre. Take this exit and it will bring you out onto a one-way street. You can either try your luck at following this road OR you can take the much easier route of simply walking your bike across the road in the direction of a sign for pedestrians, showing the way to the library. This will bring right into the middle of Stone High Street! There is parking at various points, the one I used was at the top of the street (so turn left once you have passed the library and the square) just past the Co-op.
