The Romans and Vikings travelled through this southern port although they did not stay. Finding anything from the prehistoric era is rare. Most of this region is surrounded by water, either the sea or the two large rivers; one going straight through the town centre and the other in the north. There is an abundance of countryside including sandy beaches and cliffs that offer breathtaking paths along the coast and many cycle routes focused not on traffic. In 1906, the largest earthquake in the UK damaged some buildings and then in W.W.II the rest of the city was mostly destroyed.
