I've done this route but missed out the canal toe-path as my road bike wasn't up to it. There are several other stating points.

Newton Burgoland, Heather and Packington have pub carparks to start from. congerstone has a closed pub so don't know if the carpark is available but it's a good meeting point.

Good cycling in this area with gentle, rolling hills and great views.
