Portmouth to London city, down in reverse can be used as leg one of a ride down to south of France using Portsmouth to Caen ferry crossing. Good 80 miler, so need to be fit. Stays away from the busy A roads

Really good route. Did it in reverse. Getting out of london was fine - route takes advantage of dedicated cycle paths and subways. Between the M25 and the Southdowns the route requires a lot of slugging up and freewheeling down Surrey's rolling countryside. I found this to be more challenging then the distance. It was very nice to see so much wildlife along the way; sparrow hawks, grass snakes, rabbits and deer. Places to purchase refreshments along the route are understandably few and far between. I recommend stopping at Haselmere for lunch, and Harting Stores in South Harting.

Where can I find details of this route? The on-line map is too small to follow! Thanks.

Have you tried using the enlarge map button on the bottom right of the map? Also you can zoom in and pan around.

I too did this route in reverse - London to Portsmouth before catching the evening ferry to St Malo. Hard in the Surrey Hills and over the South Downs but worth it for the scenery. Will definitely do it again next year.

I'm also planning to cycle down to Portsmouth from London to catch the 8pm evening ferry to St Malo - will be cycling with two loaded panniers - how long should I expect it to take me - I am a fairly experienced cyclist, but guessing the hills will slow me down, especially with weight on the bike.

Looks a good route. What is the Honeysuckle Bottom and Colekitchen lane (near Horsley) like? Looks like abit of a track. Would we get our roadbikes up here or would you recommend a diversion?

Does anyone now how I could download this or get a print out of the route in reverse from London to Portsmouth?

Thanks for this, I rode it in reverse from Gunwharf in Portsmouth. Was a great route and really enjoyed it, quite challenging in terms of hills but I managed well and was my first long ride (over 30 miles) on a road bike. The only warning I’d give us to be careful (if riding in reverse) when heading through Gomshall, I compared Google maps with this map, felt certain and headed up Colekitchen Lane, seriously, don’t go that way, trust me!
