Cycle Steps
Route starts at Ormskirk. Ride down the A59 towards Liverpool (mainly cycle tracks at side of road. Head towards the Docks (Seaforth, A5036). After passing a large new Tesco you go over a bridge and then come to a roundabout. At this roundabout take the 3rd exisit which is Seaforth Road. Stop at Seaforth Station and get an all area Saveaway day ticket £4.50 (if you have not already got one). Carry on down Seaforth Road, B5421, until you come to Primrose Road, A565, then head left towards Liverpool. At the first opportunity turn right and get onto the old dock road, Regents Road (less traffic) and heads towards the Liver Buildings.
At the new Ferry Terminal show them your saveaway ticket and you will get a free pass to go on the ferry. Ferries start at 10.00am on a Weekend and take 30 minutes (you get a scenic tour of the River Mersey for Free!)- frequency is every hour on the hour (check at Mersey Ferried 0151 630 1030). Get off at Seacome Ferry. Turn right and head towards New Brighton on a dedicated cycle path. At New Brighton there are cafes and toilets.
Carry on past New Brighton and keep on the coast road until you come to Hoylake where you will have to turn left inland. Head down towards Hoylake Station. There is a cycle path that runs down the side of the railway towards West Kirby.
At West Kirby you pick up the Wirral Way and head towards Hooton. Just before you reach Hooton you take a right down a bridleway which is signposted 56/70/71 and head to the A41 (If you want you can carry onto Hooton and get the train home from here).
You will be on the A41 for a short period of time and then take a left (signbposted 70) which will take you to the Shropshire Union Canal - take a right and the canal will take you direct into the town centre of Chester (If you want to visit the Boat Museum turn left and the canal will take you right there - cafe and toilets are there). Get off the canal when you see a pub called the Old Harkers Arms (up some steps - carry your bike!) at the top of the steps turn right and Chester Railway Station can be seen about 200 yards down the road.
The route is near several railways stations (New Brighton,Meols, Hoylake, West Kikby, Hooton) so if you are feeling tired you can get home easily.
