The county of Northumberland is located in the north east of England with the north of the county drawing the boundary between England and Scotland. Many battles were fought here due to its country border location and also once part of the Roman Empire. No other English county has more castles than Northumberland, they include the castles of Alnwick, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Warkworth. Northumberland has an 80 mile stretch of coastline from the North Sea and has a population density of only 62 people per square kilometre making it the least populated county in England, but arguably one of the most picturesque.
