The City of Newport is located in the south east of Wales with a population of around 140,200. It is believed that Bronze Age settlers situated themselves near the estuary of the River Usk because of the plentiful food supply it brought in. A number of defensive forts and castles were built by the River Usk, including Celtic Silures forts, a roman fort built in 75 AD, and later the Norman Newport Castle. Newport played an important part in the industrial revolution as they supplied coal and iron via the South Wales canal system.
