This is a route that follows a combination of roads and traffic free paths, and is hilly in places.
Starting beneath the imposing bulk of Middlesbrough's Transporter Bridge, this 20 mile round trip links the city centre with one of the region's finest traffic free paths, NCN route 1, through the Sylvan Wynyard Woodland Park. The dramatic Teesside starting point is one of many iconic sights along the way. You'll also pass the green, iron giant that is the Newport Lifting Bridge, its twin 185ft towers only dwarfed by the nearby transporter bridge. Once in Stockton on Tees, the route quits the riverside and heads north west heading for Wynyard Woodland Park, once the North Eastern Railway, now a tree-lined urban escape route, passing through the charming village of Castle Eden with its old station building, from which point you'll retrace your steps back to Middlesbrough. |
