The county of Merseyside was founded in 1974 and consists of 5 metropolitan boroughs including Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral. The county is situated in the north west of England, and in 2008 Liverpool was given the award of European City of Culture. It is believed that Liverpool was founded around the year 1190 but remained a relatively small city until the slave trade took off beginning in 1699 until its demise in 1834. In this period, the City of Liverpool became very wealthy, one reason being the first 'wet' dock which accommodated 100 ships at any one time. Also home to many pop groups the most famous being The Beatles.
