| Very nice and easy route but there are ten towpath gates within the 1st three miles of the route from Wigan Pier. Worth it though. | ||

| You can avoid the gates on the canal easily, but make a trade-off. Cycle down the main route from the front garden of the formal garden at Haigh Hall, through the plantations, to the front of the hospital (this is all downhill in this direction, and hard work the other way). The plantations are very scenic though, but the route is probably shorter. Then turn left at the gate and down to the pier on the A49 toward Warrington. Part of it is a bus/cycle lane. There are a few pubs on the way on Wigan Lane and Standishgate. Alternatively, come from Haigh Hall via Higher Lane and Whelley, or via Red Rock. Those canal gates can be a pain, but at least they deter pesky motorbikes. | ||
