This route is a little section taken from route 51 that allows you to travel from Cambridge to Newmarket safely away from busy roads. The route itself is double the distance if you went direct but it is a lovely enjoyable cycle in the countryside.
Starting at Jesus Green, head on to the path by the river and cycle north east. Syat on this path passing underneath Elizabeth Way, the A14, by Horningsea for 5 and a half miles until you arrive at Clayhithe Road.
At this point come off the path and cross over the river following Clayhithe road into Waterbeach. Take the 2nd right on to St.Andrews Hill. 2nd right again onto Burgess Road.
Cycle out of town along Burgess Road taking care when crossing the railway line. Go round a 90 left and you will soon arrive at a T-Junction. Turn right here and then first left onto Long Drove Road.
This road is very straight and very long, hence the name. Cycle for 2 and 3/4 miles. Then take a 90 right just as the road looks like its going to end and turn into a dirt path.
Follow the path along turning left at the group of trees, this leads you back onto the river path heading north. Cycle along this path until you arrive at Dimmock's Cote Road. Turn right and then first right onto Upware Road heading back south to Upware.
Follow the road left as you come into Upware. Then take first left onto the river path again. 3rd of a mile later turn left and follow the path north east.
Cycle for another 1 and 3/4 miles and turn 90 right heading south along a farm track leading onto Priory Drove. Once on Priory Grove take first left. Stay on Little Fen Drove until you arrive in Burwell.
Take first right and head south through Burwell and then onto the high street. When you arrive at the triangle in the road with the tree in the middle fork right and then take 2nd left on to Heath Road.
Stay on Heath road for the next 5 miles, it draws up close to the A14 and then heads away again. Shortly after you will arrive in Exning. At this point turn right then immediate left, almost a crossroads. This leads you on to Ducks Lane.
At end of Duckslane turn right, crossing the A14 over a bridge taking you right into the heart of Newmarket.
Landmarks/Pubs for lunch/Sites to see?
There are plenty of pubs alongside the canal, Burwell Museum is worth a visit, Wicken Fen is a lovely area of natural beauty.
