With a populalation of around one million people, Avon was located to the West of England. It was split between Bath, North-East Somerset, City of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, and got its name from the River Avon. The county was abolished in 1996 however many still use the name Avon. Avon boasts an 85 mile cycle route (Avon Cycleway) which is a circular route that contains a combination of quiet roads and cycle paths. Also The Avon County Council assisted the funding of the Sustrans route: Bristol & Bath Railway Path.
