| I am planning to ride from the Rhondda to Saundersfoot in the summer on a road bike - anybody got any ideas of the best route. I was thinking of - Glyneath then Cwmtwrch, ystrad gynlais brynaman then towards Lalndeilo and on to Carmarthen st clears. After St Clears is there any other road thatn the one all the traffic uses thru tavernspite etc.
Any help appreciated

| Hi bear,
unfortunately we don't have many cycle routes in wales. It would be great if you fancied adding some though and hopefully it will help others?
if you want to add a route just go here:

| If you want a tough end to your ride to Saundersfoot, turn for Laugharne in St. Clears and follow the sea through Amroth, Wisemans Bridge etc. Its very hilly but a good challenge.

| bear -National Cycle route 4 would be a good route , you can get on this from Tonyrefail or if you want a more masochistic start( with a steep initial climb) from Pontypridd . A lot of the route is traffic free and takes in pleasant spots such as Margam Park , the Millenium coastal park in Llanelli and the country lanes of Carmarthenshire -worthwhile visits are the coastal villages of Llansteffan and Laugharne ,I can recommend the Sticks pub in Llansteffan for B and B although it's changed ownership since I stayed there.
A mountain-bike or at least a hybrid would be better for parts of the route although it would be managable on a road bike as road routes around the rougher tracks are easily found and a lot of it is on road or tarmaced cycle track anyway. Sustrans web-site has the route plan and you can trace this out on Ordinance survey 50,000 scale maps .
An alternative and more spectacular start is route 47 from Treherbert mountaintop through the forestry down to Neath picking up route 4 at the foot of the Neath valley again on sustrans . If your in tour de france mode then bike up the Treherbert to Hirwaun road to get on this mountain-bike essential route or you can get on it again by a long climb through forestry from Maerdy past the reservoirs.
If your a Rhondda resident (I used to be ) then you will be well used to climbing anyway -enjoy the ride.
