Hey there, am trying to figure out a route to Kirkintilloch from the West End of Glasgow that doesn't involve any canals or really budy roads.

Anyone got any tried and tested routes? Or even just any suggestions would be great.

Thanks
xx

I've cycled up Queen Margaret's Drive, along Bisland Road, Hawthorn Street, Ashford Street, Ashgil Road, Colston Road, Crowhill Road and then finally on to Kirkintilloch Road.

The only issue with that route is at times it can be busy, especially Kirkintilloch Road which is a nightmare at the best of times.

I would maybe stick to Canal if at all possible. I'll get a route up for it shortly.

I drive the main Kirkintilloch road quite often and yes it is usually quite busy. The only saving grace is that most of it is 30 or 40 mph speed limits and most drivers observe these (they don't have much choice in lines of traffic).

I've cycled the towpath many times and love it. It's a good path and an easy ride. You could join it at Anniesland or Maryhill.

Hey

I done that this morning, bit 2 cold though for my liking!

You can start from the Forth and Clyde Canal at the top of St.Georges Road, and the path will take you right to Kirkintilloch or even further! Falkirk Wheel / Edinburgh and you wont have to worry about any roads.

I have cycled the canal towpath from Kirkintilloch to Anniesland. I used this route, for about eighteen months, to commute. The canal towpath is very uneven and very very tough on bearings, chains and brake blocks or pads. In the wet it is particularly sticky and muddy, particularly as you get nearer to Kirkintilloch. For the last two years I have used the road from Kirintilloch to Anniesland via the Torrance roundabout, Bishopbriggs past the train station, on to the Springburn road, exit onto flyover, through Possil, towards Queen Margaret Drive, via road adjacent to Kelvinside Academy and on to Gt Western Road at Gartnavel. The route is just over 10 miles and is not busy enough to dissuade me from using it.
