Joined: 03 Aug 2010 Posts: 3 Bike: | Hello, I am doing a short tour of the highlands from Glasgow to Inverness (cycle route 7) has anyone done this yet that can give me some info on the route? Its my first ride upwards. I have seen online that sustrans do a map for this route. Does anyone have a sustrans cycle route map or is there a better option of map to use? Cheers Jay |

It was perfect but the route is so well signposted the map was almost unnecessary for the journey but we needed it for planning stops etc. Just finished Glasgow to Carlisle on tandem and used sustrans map - perfect again. Enjoy the ride. Hugh |

I got most of the route on Ordnance Survey maps from the library, but was happy to take more maps than clothes. Along Clydebank there are gaps where new developments are changing roads, also the section along the disused railway is thick with broken glass. Beyond Dumbarton the signposting is excellent. The section through the QE forest, north of that hellhole Aberfoyle, is gravel track, a bit rough on the tyres. The section along Loch Venachar, then from Callander to Killin are just spectacular, be warned that there's little accomodation between Killin and Aberfeldy. Signposting again becomes a bit feeble from Kingussie, and utterly misleading trying to get out of Aviemore to Boat of Garten, Aviemore being the place you most want to get out of too. Clava Cairns was a highlight for me, but from Culloden to Inverness the signs again disappeared. Hope you enjoy(ed) it as much as I did - I hardly met anyone at all. - Keith, Staffordshire |

I found people in the Highlands to be quite warm and friendly. Even the band of local toughs in Inverness who were trying to sell drugs to tourists outside the city govenment building were easy going. A few experiences from my ride: -a hybrid bike is a good choice, or a mountain bike with semi-slicks. The route is too rough for low profile tires. -drivers in Scotland have decent manners towards cyclists compared to America. I was not uncomfortable at all on most shared motorway routes. The ones to watch out for are the tour bus drivers (in any country) give them a wide berth. -The route is very well marked but there are a few sections where you can get slightly turned around. I would be careful anywhere where the route indicats you should use caution or ride counterflow to traffic. -The tourist information centers stock the Sustrans maps if you need one along the way. Having the official map does help keep your bearings along the route. - Depending on how casual (and frugal) you are about planning, I found a great option was to sort my route plan for the day during breakfast and then pay the booking fee at the tourist office to help with arranging accomodations that night. After riding all day, its comforting to not have to dig around for a vacancy. -It will rain, probably a lot. its a great ride. If you have any questions from my experiences, feel free to email. -Randy (vaisok@hotmail.com) |
