I have been cycling for about 2 months average about 60 miles a week roughly 3 x 20 miles. My average speed is about 17-18mph. I am fed up of riding on my own and have the opportunity to join a local ride that does about 50 miles at average speed of 18-22 mph. Any tips on what i can do to ensure that i don't act like a complete amateur. And do you think that i am ready to join such a ride out or should i keep building my miles up on my own for a bit longer. I do feel a bit intimidated as its all a bit new to me. Please Advise.

Hey BW,

Most of the cycling groups I have been part of have always been more than accommodating to new members, that may not be so fit. I myself joined a group when they were all clearly better than me, but a few of the cyclists stayed back to keep me company and within no time I was cycling at their pace.

I would definitely just go along and see how it goes, let them know that your not used to doing that mileage and I'm sure there will be no problem :)

I am in a similar position to BW and want to find a group in Chelmsford. Does anyone know of a group, the only clubs I have found tend to be road racing and seem a bit Professional to me. I just want a nice weekend ride every now and then.

I've actually added a new section to the site that I am aiming to try and encourage cycle clubs to add their club to the site in order to help other members like yourself.

cycling club

if you do find one Charlie, please can you add it above :)

Cheers
