Riding on pavements

Now this might be a daft question but I just thought I would double check with You guys.
On My commute to work I need to ride on a 3 laned 40mph stretch of road about 3 mile long.The pavements do not have the cycle lane painted on them but all the crossings on the road are toucans.So am I rite in saying Im ok to ride on the pavement?.(the reason for asking is because the traffic goes like the clappers up there and some get too close for comfort).

My Profile 		there was a post about this on this site - basically, it is absolutely illegal to ride on a path next to a road unless it is a shared route but not illegal to cycle on a path, unless there is a local bylaw. http://www.bikehub.co.uk/featured-articles/cycling-and-the-law/
