Hi...

I'm new to cycling and would like to organise a charity cycle event from london to wolverhampton. I have no idea of how to approach the planning of the route, breaks or even how long to cycle for without hurting myself. any advice or comments welcome. thanks

madcute, best advise I can give after a similar event this year. Enlist the help of others because the work involved will grow week by week. Talk to others with experience of organising such events.

Good luck.

charity cycle for yourself, or organising an 'event' ?

different things!

for an 'event' loads of help, and lots to think about (and probably heaps of red tape

for yourself, nothing beats time on the bike as practice, and setting realistic daily targets.

support team with your gear?
carrying all your own kit - tent etc?
b&b's and a credit card?

how far you can go without hurting yourself depends on age, fitness, joints etc

if you are really fit, 100-150 miles a day is achievable
80-100 miles a day is not too much of an ask
50-75 miles should be your minimum target

if you imagine a reasonable 4 hours in the morning, and 4 hours in the afternoon, 75 miles is under 10mph

build up your training distances slowly, eat properly, stay hydrated, and try and do some back-to-back days so it doesn't come as a shock.

It is one thing to do 80 miles every Saturday, and quite another to do 160 over a weekend.
