Gritty Eyes

I have missed cycling the last couple of days due to grit in the eye. Very painful: my eyes refused to run, they were very dry. Went to my doctor and got some anti-biotic drops. I normally wear sun-glasses when cycling but not if it's dull. Thinking, maybe, of those which change with the light conditions, the name escapes me.

Hi Spokeslady,

Is it reaction lenses you are thinking of. I don't usually wear glasses when I'm cycling but I recently have become quite prone to getting a fly in my eye when racing down a hill, which can be very sore too.

I often see people wearing sun glasses, but I always feel they slightly obstruct my view.

Going to go out cycling tomorrow hopefully, come rain or shine... Got a new saddle (my old saddle became rock hard) and a helmet as well, so I have an excuse!!

Alan

Hi again Alan. I clocked up 37.5 mph going down a hill called Ley Hill near Bovingdon, Herts. Although I didn't get the injury there it is a concern that anything travelling toward you at that speed could get embedded in the eye. The glasses I would like are wrap around photochromic.
Enjoy you ride tomorrow. We are going to Harpenden and then back via the Nicky line, that is another disused railway line going through to Hemel Hempstead, Herts. I shall send the map later.

Last time I was cycling i found that my eyes were the main problem. They were sore and itcy and hence I moaned quite a bit (poor husband).

I had taken a piriton before hand to prevent hayfever so I wonder if it was to do with bits of grit instead. Although cant say im that tempted with the prospects of wearing the lycra, helmet and goggles. Attractive. Just have to think of burning off the fat and those tonned legs instead.

That's why cycling glasses is very important.I've always used Oakley M Frames with the "Sweep" lens. The "Heater" is the same shape, but much larger, but I would think it protects better. They no longer make the M Frames, but you can still get lenses on eBay. Not sure how the newer Oakleys (Radar & whatever they're using now) work. But all the Oakleys are overpriced. I only started using them when I was on a team and Oakley was one of the sponsors, and they've lasted this long. But I would think any cheap (but good quality) wraparounds would work the same.
