The ride started and finished at Harewood House, just a few miles north of Leeds in West Yorkshire. The event was a combination of two rides, one being 25 miles and the other being 50 miles. The first 20 miles of each route were shared before the 25 milers broke off and headed back to Harewood House. The 50 mile route then continued on to the west before circling back to Harewood. The route was very pleasant, mostly on quiet roads and some country lanes with a few major roads to cross along the way (so be careful crossing those roads). The amount of climbing we had to do on the ride was immense, much more than I've done on any previous rides. I rode 110 miles from Wakefield to Bridlington a few weeks ago, going via The Planets, through York and then following the Way of the Roses to the coast. That ride was easier than this 50 mile charity ride around Harewood! I'm by no means a serious rider (usually just do the 3 miles to work and back each day and the odd 30-50 miler once in a while) and this ride was pretty challenging towards the end. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone that likes a nice rural ride with some challenging hills but please do be prepared for some of the very steep ones ;-) I've uploaded my GPX here which I believe should be visible when the admin accepts it but there's a little more info on my blog and a link to my RunKeeper tracking of the ride: http://martincaine.com/blog/pedal_for_pounds_2011_north http://runkeeper.com/user/martincaine/activity/50703036 martincaine.com/files/gpx/2011-09-06_pedal_for_pounds_2011_north.gpx Hope this information is handy to anyone looking to take part in Pedal For Pounds North next year or perhaps anyone just looking for a nice challenging ride in West Yorkshire :) |
