Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before but TFL are issuing free cycle maps to anyone whom requests them. They allow you to order up to 6 maps free of charge out of a full set of 14.

I ordered them thinking that they would be the usual half hearted effort that one gets from a beaurocracy, but no they are actually very good indeed and well worth having if you cycle inside the M25. A lot of effort seems to have been put in. I have already found several traffic free cycle tracks that I didn't know existed near my favorite routes and they also show the new Cycling Superhighways as well as other road routes recommended by cyclists that have only minor road traffic. They seem to use a very detailed database and every road is named just like on the A-Z. Toilets, bike parks and Cycle contraflows are also shown.

The maps are not perfect, for example they miss the direct cycle track down the Limehouse cut from Bow locks which is on the OS Explorer maps, but generally these are a very commendable effort for something that is free. They also seem to be quite up to date as they are all dated June 2010

They can be ordered them from the TFL website and it looks like an electronic version may be available for smart phones and laptops for a small charge.
