Derby to Edinburgh

I am planning an April 2012 ride from Derby to Edinburgh and wondered if anyone has any advice on the best route to take.

I have checked out a few using online planners and the main split is either I go up the west side or the east side.

Any advice as we are planning to complete it in 4 days.
