Hello there, i have recently bought a new road bike and increased the miles i am doing. The problem is severe back ache after 20 mins. does anybody know the correct position and any guidelines to follow for handle bar position, saddle height etc.
I am 5ft 10" riding a 54cm Kinesis tk. it has a longer top tube length for clearance of mudguards and a 90 mm stem. my forearm at the front of the saddle measures to my finger tips and the saddle to handle bar drop is about 40mm and the saddle is level. Cananyone help, please?

I get back pain in the lower back too but I usually improve as the ride goes on. I vary my position on the saddle and do back stretching while freewheeling. It is a lot of trial and error. You may find it beneficial to get a bike fit at a good bike shop, it could be money well spent. Also do back exercises when not riding to increase flexibilty. Hope this is of some help,
Geoff

I did have a problem with backache. I am 6'4" (and 56 yrs old) and my road bike had a dropped handlebar configuration - also the gear changers were low on the frame. Rather extreme perhaps, but I had straight handlebars fitted with the gear changers by the brakes.

This has certainly eliminated the backache - but the price is rather more work for my arms to do! Still, why should they miss out on the exercise.

Ah, I missed out on the obvious point though - do have your back checked out by a physio - just in case there is any sort of injury that needs sorting out first.

I used to get back ache. It used to appear several hours after I had been cycling. Tthe problem was cured by not getting out of the saddle when cycling uphill. I just gear down now instead.
